Health Starts in the Womb with Mom
Women who get more physical activity before and during pregnancy are less likely to develop diabetes during pregnancy. A Harvard Vanguard study of vigorous exercise such as jogging, aerobics, swimming, and cycling had the least diabetes, with gentler exercise like yoga also improving the diabetes rate but not quite as much. This information is especially important for Asian women that have a higher propensity for diabetes.
Fetal heart rate is lower in pregnant moms who exercise. These heart health benefits extend into adulthood with less heart disease, diabetes and hypertension later, says Kansas University study. Evidence shows how the womb environment influences fetal development, suggesting diseases can be determined in utero.
Taking multivitamins daily during pregnancy, may improve baby's growth in the womb according to a study with African American women reported in the Annals of Epidemiology. The women in this study by Harvard and Boston U scientists had longer pregnancies and babies weighing about a pound more than babies from moms who did not take supplements. Pregnant moms who eat lots of green and yellow fruits and vegetables reduces their babies chances of eczema. A high vitamin E intake also reduced wheezing in babies. This study at the Fukuoka U in Japan enforced how important excellent nutrition is during pregnancy to reduce allergies in children. Breastfed babies are also less likely to suffer from allergies than if fed formula. Moms that eat the most nutrient dense diet through both pregnancy and nursing reduce allergy risk the most.
Vitamin and Mineral Deficiencies Cause Aging and Disease. Micro-nutrients cannot be made by the body so we must eat them. When any vitamin or mineral is in short supply, they become temporarily reserved for the most essential organs and tasks at the expense of lesser ones. If shortage continues at length, bad health ensues. Micro nutrients are involved in all bodily functions including DNA maintenance. Nutritional deficiencies can lead to DNA damage that can cause cancer, faster aging and other diseases. In a study with Scandinavian and Italians, it didn't matter whether DNA damage was done by smoking, environmental chemical exposure or nutritional deficiencies, only the extent of DNA damage mattered. It behooves women especially to ensure an adequate intake of vitamins and minerals for disease prevention both for herself and her children. Our current RDA recommendations does not seem to be sufficient in disease prevention and doesn't cover all nutrients yet, so improving your own nutrient intake is an inexpensive way to reduce present and future health care cost. natural news.com
Fat types affects women's womb health. High intakes of Trans fatty acids increases risk of endometriosis by 48% and high intakes of Omega-3 fatty acids decreases risk by 22% says Dr. Stacey Missmer from Harvard University in a new study. Trans fatty acids are mostly used in food processing for shelf life and flavor stability, but raises LDL cholesterol levels and lowers the HDL's, promotes inflammation and cardiovascular disease. Omega-3 's are best found in fish but also in nuts, eggs etc... Endometriosis can be painful and can cause fertility problems. foodnavigator.com
Unfortunately fat can also rewire brain like hard drugs. A rat study from Scripps University, FL. showed that over eating of processed junk foods and the resulting obesity breaks down the brain chemistry linked to pleasure responses, just like heroin or cocaine. This causes "food addiction" just like drug addictions. Diets of healthy natural foods did not create the same problem. foodnavigator.com
