10 Rules When Choosing a Prenatal Vitamin
Rule #1 Avoid all products that include artificial colors, flavors, sweeteners and preservatives such as, aspartame, ascelfame potassium, sucrolose, vanillin, polysorbate 80 and propylene glycol.
Rule #2 Choose products that are made with non-synthetic vitamins and minerals such as, d-alpha tocopherol, selenomethionine, beta-carotene and mineral ascorbates and citrates. Avoid calcium carbonate.
Rule #3 Choose products that do not contain inferior oils and wasteful fillers such as soybean oil and various celluloses(other than the capsule), gums and gels.
Rule #4 Choose products that contain whole foods such as, broccoli, spinach, blueberry, cherry and pomegranate.
Rule #5 Avoid products that have high amounts of isolated iron and copper, since damaging reactions may occur with the other nutrients within the product.
Rule #6 Choose products that contain the various b-vitamins in methyl form such as, methylcobalamin and pantethine.
Rule #7 Choose products that contain only standardized herbal blends and isolates.
Rule #8 Avoid “one a day” products. A good, well absorbed formula will require multiple tablets or capsules throughout the day.
Rule #9 Choose products that contain pro-biotics such as, sporogenes, acidophilus and bifidus and digestive enzymes such as, amylase, protease and lipase. This will aid in absorption and utilization of ingredients.
Rule #10 Choose products that, not only contain all essential vitamins and minerals, but have increased levels of Folic Acid and Vitamin D and supporting nutrients that may improve immune function, brain health, heart function and sugar utilization such as, colostrum, beta-glucan, chromium polynicotinate, grapeseed, acetyl l-carnitine and co-enzyme q10.
