Oh, to raise a toddler. In one, precious moment, you're cuddling on the couch... and the very next, you're being smacked, kicked or even, bitten! What gives? Well, not much, actually, because in the world of a toddler, there really isn't very much to be done in the way of the give - it's all about taking from the world what she wants, and rejecting - sometimes, with force - the rest.
Don't worry, Parents: Your toddler's seeming split personalities are not some sign of the sociopath to come. In fact, it's perfectly normal and healthy that he is learning how the world works by figuring out how to work the world... your (admittedly daunting) task is to show this little person how to elicit what he wants in socially acceptable ways, and to control the kinds of impulses that we would all still be using, if it weren't for our own persistent parents.
As with all of parenting, there is no one-size-fits-all theory that will serve as the golden ticket to your toddler's good behavior for life. That's why we thought it would be a good idea to provide a primer of some of the most notable discipline theories - what works for you will depend on your own child's unique personality makeup, as well as your own natural leanings, much of which will be based on how you were raised.
Because you and your partner were likely not disciplined in identical ways, it's a good idea to talk about how each of you envision disciplining your child as early as possible, preferably before the baby's even born!
